Rural Australia

This is a collection of shots taken in and around the City of Newcastle. A 30+ minute drive from this marvellous coastal city, takes one out into the countryside, which abounds with small communities, some of them abandoned long ago. Those areas that were founded on mining, timber cutting and the search for gold, that brought people from all over the world, to make their fortune. Australia is a young country with a very colourful history made even more so by the people who came here and founded the many areas that grew into the major towns and cities we know and love today. Originally I took a lot of the abandoned houses, as I like to sketch and watercolour them. I love the earthy colours.. the texture of the timber and the rusty iron roofs. Slab timber walls and corrugated iron roofs were the materials of the era. Corrugated iron has been replaced by Zincalume and is enjoying inclusion in modern architectural design... not only in roofing with a myriad of profiles and colours, but in interior use in kitchens and bathrooms. Of course it no longer rusts like iron did!
