Wonder Voladores in Uxmal

Temperature; +33C Wind ; 2.5 m/sec Rain; None

THINGS THAT WENT WRONG;

a. Guys were flying too fast showing no signs of cooperation
b. Pyramid was located almost against the sun
c. Sweat was blocking my eyes
d. Some nutcases were asking me to move out of the way ( politely enough not to be beaten up )
e. Few petty cash bills for tips flew out off my pocket and landed on some gal's lap

The Danza de los Voladores de Papantla (Dance of Papantla's flyers) is a ritualistic dance in Veracruz, Mexico performed by the Totonac Indians and Olmeca Indians. There is an initial dance made by five men, the instruments being a carrizo flute, a tamborcillo and maracas. The men, each representing the five elements of the indigenous world climb a top a pole, one of them stays on the pole playing a flute and dancing while the remaining four descend the pole with a rope tied by one of their feet. The rope unwraps itself 13 times for each of the four flyers, symbolizing the 52 weeks of the year.

Amazing picture; I would even call it one of the few perfect pictures I've ever seen. Everything is just right: great colours, amazing framing and PoV, great DoF and intense clarity. Big Vote!

They don't recommend trying this trick at home, as some reported cases when knots were mislocated towards the necks with very grim consequences...
Rick Bricker23-Feb-2010 06:17
Liking this crisp action shot...nicely highlighted by your dof.I am thinking it's a really good thing I wasn't the one tying the knots on the ropes....not so very good with knots....I could see these guys flying off one after another....would've made for some good shots but likely would have angered the natives.
Like your narrative here...makes for an even more interesting viewing.
Carol How21-Feb-2010 22:57
What an image and what a backdrop- amazing!
Earl Misanchuk20-Feb-2010 15:23
Thanx for the back story. I witnessed and shot a similar display a few years back, but never did know the significance of the 4 people or the number of winds of the rope.

Wow! great!

Ann Cleeves18-Jan-2010 16:36
Can't make up my mind....well, hate to say it, but I think yours just has a tiny edge over Vera's, which I have no hesitastion in endorsing as incredible. So really you didn't have to heap us with tales of woe to elicit profuse admiration. LOL!
Eldar Kadymov17-Jan-2010 22:34
Ah, common, Ann, give me a credit, could you ?! We all know that this is the second best shot of voladors in existence after this onehttp://www.pbase.com/eldarrio/image/120930297 taken by Vera ?!
Ann Cleeves17-Jan-2010 17:17
Goodness me.....what an incredible feat....the flying dance, that is. The shot is not bad either if I am to believe the dire situation you found yourself in....Mmmm....so better say the shot was incredible too!

A riveting photo. A shame about losing your money. That always happens to me in Mexico.
Guest 30-Nov-2009 10:34
Other than the small issues, you managed to get an amazing picture! Congratulations

That image should be used in their publicity...it is that good!
BleuEvanescence20-Nov-2009 04:43
Eldar...
This image alone speaks of this journey you experienced in Mexico.
The colours, the sun, the spirituality of the image, the ancient and the new,
the letting go for a moment, everything is there.
Fabulous capture and composition. Just....amazing.

I chickened out after they told me that rope won't sustain the camera weight...
Lee G13-Nov-2009 22:36
Intriquing scene and story behind the scene. Nicely captured, I hope you had your turn on the swing!

Eldar Kadymov12-Nov-2009 19:43
Now I know, amigo, why this shot was succesful, and sorry for not sending my best wishes to you from Mexico, communications problems, you know, LOL. Gallery was launched just a week ago, there will be lot more horrific things to enjoy over the course of next few weeks, or an eternity for the same matter !
Michael Weinberg12-Nov-2009 15:32
Hello Amigo. What a special shot! (and taken on my birthday) You are really showing off your camera's ability here and your technical ability as well. Outstanding color, fine exposure and terrific separation and stop action ... and all from a wide angle. Amazing. ... and the composition rocks as well. Viva Mexico and a great start to what I am sure will be a "killer" Mexico Gallery. Of course I will have to delve more deeply into this gallery before I officially proclaim this as the greatest ever Mexico Gallery, of all time, in the universe. Zy gezundt amigo. Michael.
