These photos were taken at a small snake denning area near Pinawa Manitoba in April 2005 and May 2006. The red-sided garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietalis) emerge from their winter dens, mate in large balls with a couple of dozen individuals, and then disperse for the summer. In 2005, my daughter and I were fortunate to photograph one of the mating balls on a beautiful Saturday morning. I used a Nikon D70 with an 80-200 ED and 36 mm extension tube, while my daughter used a Coolpix 5700. In 2006, I used the same setup, plus an 85 mm/1.4 with extension tubes, in May.
