Trabzon used to be called Trapezius. The first indications for the history of the city date back to the sixth century BC, when traders from Milete, operating from Sinope, founded an extra support point. A large proportion of the population at that time came from Trapezos in Arcadia. The Romans conquered in the first century BC. Emperor Hadrian had the city enlarged, including the building of a new harbour. Except for an invasion from the Goths it remained Roman until in 1462 the last Comneni emperor David handed the city to the Ottoman Mehmet Fatih (Mehmet the Conqueror, who in 1453 had taken Constantinople = Istanbul). After the sack of Constantinople by the crusaders in 1204, two grandsons of the emperor Andronicus I Comnenus had escaped and founded an independent offshoot of the Byzantine Empire at Trapezus, with Prince Alexius Comnenus as emperor. So one might state this is the city where the Roman empire finally came to an end. Modern Trabzon retains much of its medieval aspect. Monuments include most of the city walls, a part of the palace of the Grand Comneni, and several Byzantine churches preserved as mosques. Among the churches the best preserved and most remarkable is the church Aya Sofya (Hagia Sophia), now used as a museum, which overlooks the sea just west of the city centre. The church is a domed basilica with superb 13th-century wall paintings that were revealed and cleaned during 1957-63. One of the finest Ottoman monuments is the mosque and mausoleum of Gülbahar, wife of Sultan Bayezid II (reigned 1481-1512). I consider this to be one of the most interesting cities along Black Sea coast.

Trabzon’un eski adı Trapezius’tu. Şehrin tarihine ilişkin ilk izler MÖ 6. yüzyıla, yani Miletli tüccarların, Sinop’tan dönerlerken yeni bir destek noktası buldukları zamana kadar gidiyor. O zamanki nüfusun büyük bölümü Arkadya’daki Trapezos’tan geliyordu. Romalılar burayı MÖ 1. yüzyılda fethettiler. İmparator Hadrian şehri genişletti ve yeni bir liman yaptırdı. Goth’ların gerçekleştirdikleri bir istila dışında, şehir 1462’ye kadar Roma’nın elindeydi. O tarihte son Komneni Ýmparatoru David, şehri Fatih Sultan Mehmet’e teslim etti (Fatih Sultan Mehmet, 1453’te Konstantinopolis = İstanbul’u fethetmişti). Konstantinopolis’in 1204’te Haçlılar tarafından istila edilmesinden sonra, İmparator I. Komnenus’un iki torunu İstanbul’dan kaçmışlar ve Prens Alexius Komnenus’la beraber ve onu imparator yaparak Trapezus’ta Bizans İmparatorluğu’nun bağımsız bir parçasını kurmuşlardı. Yani, bu şehrin Roma İmparatorluğu’nun sonlandığı yer olduğu iddia edilebilir. Modern Trabzon, ortaçağa ait görünümünü büyük oranda koruyor. Birçok şehir duvarı, Büyük Komneni’nin sarayının bir bölümü ve şu an cami olarak korunan birkaç Bizans kilisesinden oluşan anıtlar var. Kiliseler arasında en iyi korunan ve en göze çarpanı, Ayasofya Kilisesi. Şimdi müze olarak kullanılan kilise, şehir merkezinin batısında ve denize yukarıdan bakıyor. Bu kubbeli kilisenin, fevkalade güzellikteki 13. yüzyıl duvar resimleri 1957-63’te ortaya çıkarılmış ve temizlenmiştir. Şehirdeki en güzel Osmanlı eserlerinden biri, Sultan 2. Bayezid’in (1481-1512 yıllarında sultandı) karısı adına yapılan Gülbahar Camii ve Mozolesi. Trabzon’un Karadeniz kıyısındaki en ilginç şehirlerden biri olduğunu düşünüyorum.
