Bursa Emir Sultan Camii May 2014 7082.jpg

On the picture: The mihrab’ (prayer niche, which indicates the direction of Mecca) and the ‘minber’ (pulpit where the imam/prayer leader stands to deliver sermons). The mihrab is executed in a 19th century late-Ottoman ‘Turkish Baroque’ style, which was influenced by European Neo-Classicism (and more specifically here by the French ‘Nouvel Empire’ style). The minber has more classical Ottoman looks, although some details are Neo-Baroque too.

Note: The term ‘Turkish Baroque’ is a general one; if necessary, more specific terms can be used: ‘Barok’ (= Neo-Baroque), ‘Rokoko’ (= Neo-Rococo) or ‘Ampir’ (= ‘Nouvel Empire’).
