Demre Nicolas December 2013 4135.jpg

Before the tourism boom began in the 1980s the local economy depended on agriculture, which is still important today. The climate is the typical Mediterranean pattern of hot dry summers and warm wet winters. Demre and the villages around traditionally grow pomegranates and citrus fruits, and more recently a large quantity of fruits and vegetables all year round in greenhouses, some of them made of glass, but mostly using translucent plastic (which disappears in summer, when greenhouses are not needed).
