Istanbul June 2010 7501.jpg

This is at the Arab Camii, the Arab's mosque. It was taken over by the Moors who had in the 16th century been expelled from Spain and who settled in this district. It was a church, probably founded by the Dominicans in 1323-37, dedicated to St. Dominic. It burned partially several times, was restored again and widened, but remained a Gothic typical Latin church: a long hall, ending in three rectangular apses and with a bellfry (now minaret) at the east end. The wooden roof and galleries date from a restoration in 1913-19, when the original floor was uncovered and many Genoese tombstones came to light, now in the Archaeological Museum.
