Begging bowls (keşkül). Originally they would be made of the shell of an Indian coconut-like fruit. To overcome pride and conceit dervishes were required to beg, or rather “accept gifts as a blessing from God” – since begging itself was forbidden. The bowls could be made of any material as long as they looked like the original ones, so ones of silver with gold inlay are known. They would hang from the arm on chains.
