The full name of this structure is the Mercer Williams House Museum. Construction of the house began in 1860. It was built for the great grandfather of Johnny Mercer the lyricist, songwriter and singer famous from the mid-1930s through the mid-1950s. In 1981, Jim Williams the owner of the house was accused of murdering his assistant Danny Lewis Hansford in the house. Williams was tried four times for the murder and was never convicted. The murder and its aftermath are the subject of the book and movie, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil," by John Berendt.
