Heian-jingu is a Shinto shrine. It is not old by Japanese standards. The oldest structures in the Shrine were built in 1895 to celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the capital of Japan being established in Heian Kyo (Kyoto). The Shrine is dedicated to the spirits of the first and last emperors who ruled from Kyoto, Emperor Kammu (737-806) and Emperor Komei (1831-1867). In addition to Heian being the former name of Kyoto it also refers to a period of Japanese classical history from 794 until 1185 c.e.The buildings are close replicas of the old Kyoto Imperial Palace (destroyed in 1227) from the Heian Period but at two-thirds their original size.
