Marine Flying Field Miami (one of the Curtiss Flying Fields leased from Glenn Curtiss)

The U. S. Marine Corps leased the old Curtiss Flying Field from Glenn Curtiss for $1 a year for the duration of the war. It was used for training Marine aviators how to fly and it was the first Marine Corps airfield solely used by Marine aircraft.

Marine Flying Field Miami was in operation from March 1918 until September 25, 1919. It was 50 acres in size and located on the north side of the Miami River at approximately NW 33rd Avenue, Miami.

Thank you to Mark Lincoln for providing this link with more information about Marine Flying Field Miami http://www.mca-marines.org/leatherneck/flying-devil-dogs and Keith who provided other valuable information in his comments under the first photo below, such as this link: http://par.multics.org/NAVYWWI/The_United_States_Navy_in_the_World_War.html which contained the four photos of Marine Flying Field Miami that I used below.

"The First Marine Aviation Force, commanded by Captain Cunningham, was formed on April 15, 1918, at the Curtiss Field on the edge of the Everglades outside Miami, Fla. It was made up from personnel of the First Aviation Squadron and the Aeronautic Detachment, both of which had disbanded the day before. The four squadrons of this Force, designated "A", "B", "C" and "D", rapidly trained for combat, flying Curtiss JN-4's and Thomas-Morse Scouts. They were augmented by some 80 Navy pilots who transferred to the Marine Corps in anticipation of a more rapid deployment to the war zone."
