Mid 1960's - the "South Beach" we remember, between the pier and the jetty

South Beach, Miami Beach, Florida view map

Thank you to Robert Bowman for contributing this great old image of the most popular beach for teens in Dade County in the 60's. This beach between the jetty and the fishing pier was packed with teens, surfers and skim boarders every weekend during the year and every day during the summers in the 1960's. The two-story parking garage offered close convenient parking at a reasonable fee and shade from the blazing sun on the first floor. The Miami Beach Kennel Club is on the left side. Life was great!

Guest - My friends mom would drop us off at the old dog track and we would dive the jetty's all day. She would pick us up at the end off the day. They used to serve the best slice off pizza at the corner of the parking garage. We were all of 10 years old. We would catch tropical fish for our aquariums. Boy did this shot bring back memories.

The wooden pier I remember well as where a date with a Miami High School football player took me. He proceeded to chase me around the pier trying to get me to kiss him -- on the first date no less. He pinned me to a little building on the structure and when he tried to kiss me I ducked and he kissed the building, at least that's how I remember it. This guy didn't get a second date with me. He probably didn't want one either. :)

this pier us kids fished from so many times as well as swim under it. we would follow the boats that would go out to the sea from the jetty's. .On the other side of the jetty's was & I guess still is the Government Cut. My dad had a part time job at the race track he walked the dogs before the race. The parking lot to the race track on the weekends had loads of surfers and would be bands that were pretty good. there was a surf shop the guy that use to own it I think his name was Corky. I loved those days.

if that is really south beach, i used to surf by the cement pier. saw kc and the sunshine band sign autographs there, but i don't think the lead singer was there. is that the parking garage for biscayne kennel club? on the weekends the bottom floor would be jammed with people playing bongo drums. on the corner closer to the pier, there was a tiny hot dog stand. i used to snorkel under the cement pier. there was a miniature reef underneath it. i was still in grade school. christian olson.
