Whole strip leveled in the past few years.

This is actually an item from the 1950s, as the phone number for the restaurant was 4-2211. The '81' prefix was for routing calls to Key Biscayne. North Dade used the routing prefix '881'.

As our area grew, late 50s phone books would have five, six and seven digit exchanges depending on the size of the exchange such as FRanklin-3-5099, 7-4218 and 82-5655.

Remember this restaurant very well. They used to serve at the table a number of different soups that you could try and lettuce wedges with various dressings before the mains course. The site became where Rudys Restaurants started by Doug Rudolph was and now a Miami Subs which is out of business.

This was always a special place. They had a "different" come-on. Was it special soups? or something of note?
Always enjoyed it.

Hurricane Harbor was originally built on Key Biscayne by my father, Elliott Mackle, as part of the early development of Key Biscayne, which inluded more than 1,500 homes, shops and the Key Biscayne Hotel & Villas, where Richard Nixon used to stay. I well remember all of them.

There was also a Hurricane Harbor on Bisc. Blvd. and around NE 127 street... Really had great steaks and their Harbor drink was well worth spending the evening there......
