1930 - The Goodyear Blimp Defender at Miami Municipal Airport

Miami Municipal Airport, Miami, FL

Miami Municipal Airport was located on the east side of LeJeune Road and between the equivalent of NW 110th and 119th Streets. See http://www.pbase.com/airlinerphotos/airports_oldmiami for more information on this airport that has totally disappeared from the landscape. The airport was renamed to Amelia Earhart Field in honor of her taking off from there on her ill-fated around the world flight where she disappeared in the South Pacific. The City of Hialeah Police Headquarters occupies the old site, along with scads of warehouses.

The blimp was my brother's and I bigest joy when we were small children. It was based on the Causeway going to Miami Beach. However I don't remember what year was moved there. I do remember it being there, sometime in the late 30,s and in the 1940's. That was a real thrill for a kid.
