1965 - Mary Ann Knight and me at the Hialeah High Class of 1965 Senior Prom (details of the weekend below the image)

Fontainebleau Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida

We are posing at the Hialeah High Class of 1965 Senior Prom at the Fontainebleau Hotel on Miami Beach. We triple-dated for the prom, using a rented Hertz 1965 Chevy Impala from the airport. Stupid me had to drive since I rented the car instead of sitting in the crowded back seat and smooching. After the prom we had a great dinner at the old South Pacific Restaurant on South Federal Highway (US1) in Hallandale, followed by a game or two of bowling at Palm Springs Lanes which stayed open late for prom night. After a few hours sleep we were off for a day of more fun at Johnson Street beach in Hollywood followed by movies that night.

January 2009: I found a list of the weekend's events in an old high school book that I haven't seen since probably 1965 after I wrote it. Here's the timetable of events as I recorded them:

Friday, May 14, 1965

2:15pm - classes end
2:25pm - arrived home (darn, that was fast)
3:30pm - cashed checks at bank
4:00pm - picked up notarized statement for rental car and a corsage from Aunt Norma at Jones Shutter Products in Miami
4:30pm - picked up Chevy Impala from Hertz Rent A Car at MIA
5:00pm - picked up Ray's corsage (Why was I getting Ray's corsage? Because it was near the airport?)
5:30pm - bought film and flash bulbs (great advance planning!)
6:00pm - started dressing
6:35pm - picked up Mary Ann at her home (I'd still be getting ready if this was now) - she lived at least 10 to 15 minutes away depending on traffic
6:50pm - we consumed snacks at my home, took photos of Ray & Helen, Jack & Donna, Mary Ann and me
7:30pm - more photos at Jack Sullivan's home
8:00pm - left Jack's home for the prom
8:30pm - arrived at the Fontainebleau Hotel
11:00pm - we left the prom after a great time

Saturday, May 15th, 1965

12:00am - arrived at the South Pacific Restaurant on US 1 in Hallandale (what a shame it's no longer there)
1:45am - we left the South Pacific
2:15am - the girls changed clothes from their prom attire to more sporty outfits (where?) and we arrived at Palm Springs Lanes for bowling a game or two
3:05am - we left Palm Springs Lanes after Ray and Helen brought the stinky car back from lovers lane
3:15am - dropped Mary Ann at her home
4:00am - arrived home for some brief sleep
9:30am - we had breakfast at Royal Castle after meeting at Jack's house
10:30am - arrived at Haulover Beach
10:45am - left Haulover Beach for Hollywood Beach (Johnson Street bandshell area) (Haulover must have been empty?)
11:15am - arrived at Johnson Street beach
3:00pm - left Johnson Street beach back to Hialeah
3:45pm - went swimming at the Sullivan's pool in Hialeah to get all the sticky salt water off
4:15pm - dressed and took Ray home
5:30pm - returned the rental car to Hertz at the airport
6:30pm - left to get my Aunt Norma's car
7:30pm - picked up Mary Ann at her home
7:45pm - arrived at the Shores Theatre to see 007 in "Dr. No" and "From Russia with Love"

Sunday, May 16, 1965
12:05am - had Mary Ann home
12:30am - arrived home and went to sleep

This was a most memorable weekend with great friends and a great girl.

Expenses Log (keep in mind that the minimum wage was $1.25 an hour in 1965 - I can't remember what I made on my Herald route but it was enough plus I mowed front yards for $1 or the whole yard for $2 in awfully sweaty hot humid weather)

$8.50 - tuxedo rental
$1.00 - shoes rental
$17.00* - car rental (see note below)
$11.00 - dinner at the South Pacific
$5.00 - prom tickets
$7.50 - corsage
$3.50 - bowling
$5.00 - food
$4.00 - movies
$5.00 - gifts
$3.50 - miscellaneous expenses
_____

$70.00 - approximate total

*that car rental was expensive because that $17 is slighty below what I pay now, 44 years later, on Priceline sometimes for car rentals from Hertz, Avis, National, Budget, Alamo, etc., plus Hertz demanded a $200 cash deposit on the car since I was under their normal age limit of 21 or 25

other sizes: small medium original auto

Don,

Nice picture of you and my mom. We got a kick out of it during a party last week.
