June 2007 - interior office space on the first level of the former Naval Reserve Air Base hangar before MDAD demolished it

Opa-locka Airport, Florida

A 1930 or 1931 photo of this historic hangar is located at the top of this airport gallery, specifically at http://www.pbase.com/donboyd/image/103114497 . Unfortunately government officials in this county see little value in preserving historically significant buildings and land and just about everything old is flattened just for the hell of it or to line someone's pockets.

I think I'm mistaken. I looked carefully, and it's clearly the old hangar's door appearing behind the pass-thru window on the left. Initially I thought it was my father's old office (complete w/pass-thru window) in building 147. My CFI's office was in one of those buildings next to 408 -- the Enlisted O Club. The sign was still above the door the last time I saw it in the late 70's. Hard to believe those buildings are gone -- 147 was the biggest hangar on the base, there was even a gymnasium-sized room on one of the upper floors. Thanks for the photos and the memories.

I could be screwed up but my recollection is that this is the southeast corner of Bldg. 408. I should have taken notes as to where I was at the time I was taking the photos.

I'm wondering if this photo was from building 408, or the much larger bulding 147? It looks remarkably like an office that I remember being located in the SW corner of 147.
