Discretion is the better part of valour.
Kailey used to chase deer off any path we were on, but she would sensibly stop as
soon as the deer started moving away. (Unlike Becky and Max who would recklessly
pursue deer if they got a chance. It was dangerous for the deer and the dogs.)
However we have had a somewhat aggressive doe in our neighborhood for some time.
Several months ago Kailey ran at it to make it get off "our" path. The doe was not
intimidated and it charged Kailey, who immediately turned around and ran off at top
speed. Good thing Kailey is fast because the doe was running hard after her.
(Deer can do a lot of damage to a dog if they are so inclined.) As a result
of this incident Kailey stopped chasing deer.
This photo is from yesterday. When Kailey and I walked around a bend we came across
a deer. The deer moved away from us but Kailey immediately turned around and headed
back to safer territory. This is her heading back, leaving me to be eaten by the deer.
