Aircraft Nose Art

Although officially frowned upon, it was not uncommon for aircraft used in the Second World War to be adorned with additional decoration. It's a custom that's also appeared in other conflicts, but not quite to the same extent, and which has also been kept alive by the restorers of these warbirds. These decorations were usually painted at the cockpit area, toward the front of the aircraft, and hence they are known as "nose art".

There are two themes to this gallery. Photographs of actual nose art on preserved aircraft, and images that are inspired by those originals.
