AUSCHWITZ

In 1996, while working for S.L. Benfica, we went to Poland, to play with R. Chorzow wich is about 20 miles away from Oswiecim (Auschwitz).
We (all the reporters) went there on a very short trip. I almost had no time to actually watch what I was looking at. I just tried to get the largest amount of pictures that was possible on a 2 hours visit.
In photographic means, these are far from being the best quality images I´ve ever done.
Hiding behind the camera, all that I was seeing had no impact on me, while I was there.
For the years that came, each time I handle the images, I get physically sick. It´s very painful to remember each corner of the camp, and as a paradox, I do well remember them all. To visit this inhuman place is a lifetime experience.
And should, today more than ever, be a lesson to ALL our contemporary fellows who give some grotesque ignorant creatures such a power...

I would like to reply to comments posted by Dave where he questions the lack of bullet holes in the Death Wall. I have just returned from a trip through Poland where I visited both Auschwitz and also the Wolf's Lair (Hitler's Eastern Front HQ near Ketrzyn in NE Poland). In answer to Dave's comments, The Wall was destroyed by the Nazi's at the end of the war in common with many other facilities in the Auschwitz camps. The current wall is a representation constructed by ex-prisoners after the war. In addition to the testimony of camp survivors, executions at the Wall are also described by Rudolf Hoess (Auschwitz Commandant) in his autobiography, written shortly before he was executed in 1947. The wall is constructed from wood and some sort of daub mix which is plastered over the front. I had never seen it before, but I saw it subsequently at the Wolf's Lair where it forms the outer plaster of a watchtower beside building 18. It would appear to be some form of shrapnel protection which would in turn explain why it was used as a bullet catch on an execution wall. I hope this clears up any uncertainty on Dave's part. I would recommend Commandant of Auschwitz by Rudolf Hoess (Wydawnictwo Prawnicze 1951) (recently published in paperback by Phoenix Press) as further reading on the subject. It's available from the Auschwitz bookshop, which is a place that Dave should perhaps visit.

I feel exactly the same way. I just arrived from Poland. I was in Warsaw for 7 days and during that time I visited Auschwitz (camp I). During the 3 hours visit I was not "touched" by what I was seeing as I thought I would be. But a few days later and after looking for holocaust information in the internet, I began to feel all the emotions that I expected to feel in Auschwitz. It's so strange, so weird... I just don't understand how one can say that all these things never happened. Everyone should visit Auschwitz at least once. Now, I want to/I must watch to "The Pianist" movie again. It's sure that I'll see it in a very different way than at the first time.

Guest I am reading the comments and lokking at your pictures and my eyes are flooded with tears...I have visited Dachau in '97 when visiting a friend in Munchen, and I think you have done an excellent job with your so realistic photographs... Unfortunately there are those misguided creatures known as holocaust deniers. It saddens me that only something like this could be expected of humans and nothing else- no dog would torture another in such a way, perhaps we have gone too far in our search for knowledge and found hell. The fear that exsisted during the 1930s-1940s is completely incomprehendable in our society- thankfully, and as much as I loathe the SS, the SA and the Nazi's in general; how many people can say that given the chance to live and keep their families safe, they wouldn't have done the same thing? Unfortunately I fear I'd be too cowardly to refuse. I hope to visit sometime in the near future, not that I think I will enjoy it but I feel it is something we should do, and maybe it would save us from a repetition of such attrocities

I just returned from a trip to Eastern and Central Europe where I was fortunate enough to visit both the Auschwitz and Burkenau camps. These pictures do a very good job presenting what is in the museums, and what the camps look like. How sad.... The experience was very emotional. To think that human beings could commit such atrocities. For the question from the ignorant man about bullet holes in the wall of death...the wall is made of some kind of woven metals so as to absorb the bullets and not make holes. This wall is situated between two barricks where prisoners would have been sleeping while the shootings were taking place. The windows facing the courtyard were boarded up, and the shootings were to be as hidden as possible so as not to awaken the prisoners. But, thank you for helping me realize the importance and necessity of sharing my experiences abroad. Perhaps I will be able to share my stories and my pictures with some doubting, conspiracy theorist along my life path.

Great gallery. I was born not far from Auschwitz, and I've visited and photographed that place many times. One of these days I'll have to put my photos up as well. Great work! Oh yeah, Dave, I'm willing to pay for buckets of Zoloft and Prozac if it helps your dire situation. Alternatively I recommend a rubber room, wide screen TV for re-education and an eventual return to the HUMAN race.

Is Dave blind? Been there myself. The place is dented with too many shots to count. Good that a shared photo can keep a debate this important alive. I was there in November wearing my huge comfortable coat and 3 layers of sweaters, but was still freezing immensly. Couldn't stop thinking about all the poor human beings who had walked around in only one layer of clothes. That was the greatest impact on me. I think the waiting to die might be more important than being shoot in front of a wall.

Very confronting and interesting gallery! People denying the holocaust are people we should feel pity for since they obviously need love in their lives, love and understanding and probably psychological treatment. Holocaust denyers are messengers of evil. Thanks again for your pictures, I hope I will witness the site one day myself because I really think the horror of the second worldwar will penetrate into my mind more that way even when I already feel the pain and suffering without having seen this in real. -Menno

I find it amazing that there are people who can actually think that millions of people having the same experience with the camps, the soldiers, and the ghettoes could have possibly gotten their stories so coordinated that they could pull off a worldwide hoax. Can't the pictures, the documents, the physical evicence penetrate their brains? In any case, your photos create an amazing impression. Thank you for documenting the atrocities for the learning of generations.

I was in this camp....on my last vacations.....and i didnt have the time to see all the barracks...but i felt the impact of all the facts that occured there.... i have some photos...i would like to send you ... yours are very very interesting.... Everyone should remember the things that occured in those camps....

I visited the Auschwitz recently and had taken some photos there. However you did a greater job by taking more "realistic" photos than I did. Keep up with your great work !

Thanx for taking the pictures. I was there in June 2000 and when I saw your pictures, the memory just came back to me. You did a great job. I could only remember my heart sank and my hands were way too heavy to hold my camera and do the shooting. It was a very impactful visit and I hope more people would remember not to make the same historical mistake once again ...

hi there. your pictures are really impressing. it makes me shiver. i've been to "Therezienstad" in prague. it was really horrible to walk true the same corridor, those people walked before they got shot! it really freaked me out. and if you see those cells..... there were so many people in a cell for 10 persons. i am so glad i don't have to experience all that, those people went true... it makes me realise, i musn't complain about the small thins. i think your pictures show how hard it was living in those camps, and i think it worked. like i said before: very impressing pictures! patricia www.patries.tk
