Lackeen Castle

Co. Tipperary view map

This castle was owned by the O'Kennedy clan and was built in the 16th century. It is probably best known as the place where the Stowe Missal was found, buried in the walls, in the 18th Century. It is well preserved which is said to be the result of the owner joining the English army instead of going abroad after the treaty of Limerick in 1691.

Only Norman castles were built in Ireland in the late 12th century. It wasn't until several hundred years later that the tower houses were built. They are generally smaller and used different construction methods. There is at least one websites with the story that the Stowe missal was found during the "re" building of the castle in the 16th century instead of in 1735. There was Norman presence in Lorrha so it is quite possible that the Lackeen site was also occupied by them.

This castle was built in the 12th century and renovated in the 17th century.
