Caver Beasley and Turtle

Kentucky, US

While negotiating the first lake of the Webster Cave System, I spotted an object floating in the water. It turned out to be a small turtle. Turtles and snakes do not frequent caves because of the low (54 degree F) ambient temperature. This little guy obviously washed in during a flood event. We trapped him in a hastily fabricated prison of rocks, then picked him up on the return and deposited him back in the forest. Here, Curtis Beasley relaxes in his kayak with the lap turtle.
