Vincentown, NJ Gallery

As I said in the introduction to this collection of photographs, this is an ongoing project that is constantly evolving as new information becomes available. In May of 2006, after more than 4 years of work, I received the most earth-shaking, world-upside-down news that I could have imagined. Just the week before, I had been contacted by the webmaster of the Southampton (NJ) Historical Society, concerning this gallery of Vincentown photos. He lives in Vincentown which is located in Southampton Township and was naturally excited to discover my collection of 100 year old images from Vincentown. He was able to identify several of the photos, which was a welcome bit of news for me. The shock came a week later when he said someone in Vincentown had just donated 900 film and glass plate negatives to the Society and that they contained all of the photos in my JR Moore Gallery. The family knew that when Moore died, he left all of his photography effects to his nephew, Vincent Irick, who lived in Vincentown. They also believed that when Vincent died in about 1949, his widow destroyed all of the negatives. To make this find even more fantastic, the majority of the negatives were 4x5 and 5x7 glass plates and each was stored in a protective sleeve which contained descriptive text about the photographs. This new information should add enormously to my understanding of the collection. In fact, it has already had a major impact as I now know that all the photos in this Vincentown Gallery were actually taken by Vincent Irick, rather than JR Moore. Vincent was also the one who numbered and printed all the photos in this collection. Vincent's photos span the same timeframe, May/June 1898 until September 1901, as JR Moore's. Photography obviously provided a close tie between the two men. After Moore died of a brain aneurism while on a photography trip to Ontario, Canada, in September, 1901, Vincent went through all of his uncle's negatives and numbered and printed a large selection of them. Moore's negatives end just shy of #750, which is where Vincent started numbering his own work, some of which he printed as well. He then took this collection of about 400 prints and left them with his Grandfather, JR Moore's father, who was still living in Virginia. There the prints remained for almost 100 years while I, and members of my family, would occasionally look at them and wonder about the stories they held. Since Vincent ultimately played such an enormous role in the survival of this collection of images, I am leaving all of his Vincentown images in the JR Moore collection. It seems to be the only right thing to do. I am also adding the dates and captions that Vincent recorded on the negative sleeves.
