Camden East alvar area

This is a typical view of terrain in the Camden East alvar area where we spent part of the morning of Oct. 14, 2003, while looking for land snails and surveying other species. This is an alvar area on the Napanee Limestone Plain just east of the village of Camden East. It features large areas of exposed limestone, a thin layer of soil with grasses, Viper's Bugloss, and other vegetation which favours dry soils. Eastern Red Cedar and small clumps of White Birch are the main tree species in this area.
