the chancel - facing the light

This must be one of the most dramatic architectural spaces in England. If describing the structure as 'soaring', the comparison is to the wingspread of birds at home in the ether; the vaulting does not seem to be earthbound or generated from the ground upwards. The reduction to the bare essential of physical structure opens the way to the spiritual world in way I only know similarly demonstrated in the great Adagios of Mahler in his 3rd, 9th & 10th symphonies, where a few widely spaced tones reach for heaven unsupported by orchestration. I suppose one can try to confine it to the boundaries of photography a hundred times without fully succeeding.

Principal benefit of these structures was probably the economic impact of the spending to construct them. What went on inside them is another thing entirely . . .

Shmuel brings up an interesting point. The institutionalised churches have so much mayhem to answer for, it is difficult to look at their artefacts and music without a question mark. In my case being a softie anarchist I especially distrust anything large. Where the particular artists are evidently inspired, I don't think they need be held responsible for the mayhem. There is, alternatively, impressive beauty in small and deconsecrated churches as I hope my galleries demonstrate and likewise in a Schubert string quartet.

A lot of time and effort went into building this magnificent building...

Magnificent work. If one ever doubts the necessity of religion in human history, these works of art, as well as music, may provide a huge cause in favor. A pity that these very religions have served (and still do) an evil inspiration for a major cut of the most horrid atrocities of mankind…
