Aunt Clara's Dishes

A memory which has lasted, and never dimmed in almost 60 years, is of the bus trips my Aunt Clara would take me on to Olympic Park & the boardwalk at Asbury Park, both in NJ. Clara loved the games of chance and she'd wow me with her lucky wins. One time she won a whole box of dishes and we laughed and laughed as we carried this carton of HEAVY dishes at least a half a mile to the bus stop. A simple memory, yet I still see the sparkles and glitz of the bright lights, sounds of songs in the air and of the rides she shared with me. Bless you Aunt Clara.

Really tells the story of those wonderful memories! I love the transparency of the gambling wheels and the way the light and crystals give them a happy sparkle. I see a tiny face...like a reflection... through the wheel on the left. I didn't see the bus until I read Skunk's post. I like when that happens...makes me want to explore the piece more. :-)

This is so you, V. In the last pictures you posted, your art has really evolved. What happened in the year you took off from CM? This tells a wonderful story with the china being most important. I love the wheels and buss and all the other little additions. Somehow you integrated the abstract with reality. Really well done.--skunk

Such a sweet story, and I love the combination of those oh-too-sweet dishes and the somewhat sinister gambling devices--that's life, right?

Hey, fellow-ette Jersey Girl - this made me think of Asbury Park, too - Gosh, how I loved going "Down the Shore" as a kid, and as an adult with my kids. I see your happy memories in this image and thank you for sharing it, too.
