I had the pleasure of covering a few Talladega NASCAR races while working for the newspaper. I never understood the attraction of watching cars go round and round and round a track. However, the fans make these races an event worth experiencing.
I've always liked this picture. I was moving to another turn on the track and caught my friend taking a break from the action to watch the cars go by. I don't know if it holds true today but when I shot the races we were allowed to roam the grassy burns just on the track side of the in-field fence. All that protected us from the cars was about 40 yards of grass and a 10-5 foot retaining wall. We'd feel the rubber flying up from the field as cars whizzed by.
