2 for 1
Butterflies are frantic in the afternoon heat. The shooting action is hard to anticipate and you really don't know what you have for sure until later. This pair landed in the same plane of focus.
Spicebush Swallowtail on Horsemint in Filtered Light
I think a good butterfly picture consists of three things. A great flower, a "fresh" butterfly, and ideally great light. This one has all 3. I could see the very soft filtered light on this flower so I just waited and got lucky.
I much prefer to take pictures of butterflies in flight, but this hanging pose is pretty good and seems to resonate with the shape of the roundish flower. I love the colors.
Tiger Swallowtail on Milkweed
Frittelary Fly By
Queen Anne's Lace is no lure for this Frittelary as it just flies on by on its way to the horsemint.
