While the Beijing Olympics drew the world attention,
some local people enjoyed watching Chaozhu Opera instead.
The show was open to the public for free.
The stage structures and settings were as simple as possible because of the tight budget.
Soft scenic drawings on cloth screens mounted on wood structures
were used to represent the place where the action was taking place.
The opera was performed in Chaozhou dialect
and some local people (Cantonese) had difficulty understanding the performance.
Electronic display boards showing Chinese subtitles
were installed at both sides of the stage in order to remove the language barrier.
