Lake Winnipeg is Huuuuuge

The city of Winnipeg, between Lake Winnipeg and Lake Manitoba about 20 miles off the lower left corner of this photo
from March 2014, was my mid-day destination for Day 5. The frozen lake at the top of the photo is Lake Winnipeg itself,
stretching north into the distance. The river at lower left flows north through Winnipeg to the lake: we're in
the country where the rivers flow north, into Hudson Bay.

One thing I learned this trip is that Lake Winnipeg is enormous: 250 miles long from north to south, with an area
comparable to Lake Erie and bigger than Lake Ontario (though it's much shallower than either of them). More important
for travelers, there are no roads east over the top of Lake Winnipeg (though ice road truckers drive on the lake
itself in winter), so any east-west travel has to dip below the lake on the way to Saskatchewan.

I drove to Lake Manitoba this trip (read on), but Lake Winnipeg will have to wait for another visit some day.
