I'm not sorry I missed out on the line-crossing ceremony. My first time was on AOM French Airlines, and the only reason I was awake was a patch of nasty turbulence. Our kids enjoyed it under King Neptune's watchful eye when we crossed the equator south-to-north off the east coast of Isla Isabela. We actually crossed four times that day, a feat I'll probably never repeat on a ship (although I would like to get back there to see the volcano erupting).

I'll be keeping an eye on our transformers. Neighborhoods nearby have buried cables. Much nicer but probably more difficult to maintain.

I’ve never been south of the equator so if I had been a sailor then I’d be called a pollywog meaning I’ve never had the opportunity to look for the southern cross. Loved the song.

Single phase is very easy to identify, if there’s one transformer generally its single phase. There are a few weird exceptions but even then in this situation it’s easy to see there are only 3 service drop wires going to the structure. 3 phase gets much more complicated but in most situations 3 transformers means 3 phase and the service drop will have 4 wires. There are times 2 transformers can supply 3 phase (open Delta) but it’s an uncommon and less stable hookup.

I could go on and on but I can see your eyes already glazing over from here. Paul

Paul, seeing Orion means winter to me. I've been south of the equator for several times but never managed to get a good photo of the Southern Cross (good song, too).

Power lines, poles, and transformers are visible from every window in our house (fiber recently added to the lower tier). How does one identify a single-phase transformer?

On a 2nd look now I see Orion peeking through the trees just to the right of that single phase pole mounted transformer. Paul

I recognize the Pleiades and Taurus. Two hours west of me is the Flint Hills and is considered a dark sky area. Wish I’d been out there when the Aurora Borealis was showing. Paul

We have terrible light pollution as well. I was trying to photograph an aurora but settled for this instead.

That's nice, I never get to see any stars, being buried in city light as I am. Traveller
