Focusing on What's Important

Britanny, France

This is one of the last pictures I took of my mother. We were on a family vacation in Brittany, in the village where my wife and I had our honeymoon twenty years before. My mother was afflicted with crippling arthritis for the last twenty-one years of her life, but she always managed to stay cheerful. She did this, partly, by focusing on the good things about life, and not dwelling on the horrible disease that filled her life with pain. Here she is focusing (like the camera) on one of life's great pleasures--an ice-cream sundae. I still miss her terribly.

Wonderful photo. My mother passed away several months ago and I became "the keeper of the family photos." I wish now I had a shot of every day of her life. Being realistic, though I know even my long suffering and mostly willing husband/model, would say enough if I tried to do that to him. We shoot when the opportunity arises and enjoy the memories. Thank you for sharing this one.

Clever title, given the focus on the sundae in the image. The story is very moving and I'm sure you have many wonderful memories of your mother. Regards, Michael

Well, I like that the Sundae is in focus, she is in soft focus...there's something arty (in a good way) regarding this presentation. Traveller

Such a touching story, Alastair. This is a wonderful photo, and I'm glad that you have it--and many enduring memories of your mother--to continue giving some comfort.
