Comments on commenting

Commenting on photos is often difficult, especially for new members who may not feel comfortable giving advice or criticism to the “old hands”. You may even prefer to wait and see what other people say about your photos then follow their lead.

The comments on the gallery photos are what make the challenge community grow and the entries improve. There are no qualifications required for writing helpful comments. Everyone is welcome to comment on everyone else’s photos and almost all comments are appreciated and welcomed.

If you are new to commenting, try this three step process:

1. What is your first impression?
2. What message, if any, does the photo give to you?
3. Does the photo “work” for you. If not, why not?

Consider the above steps, then write your comment. If you can see a way to improve the photo, say so. If you simply like the photo very much, say so.

We all want honest critiques. If you know a better way to process the photo, share it with the group. If you can see a more balanced or interesting crop, tell the photographer. If the photo is showing a colour cast on your monitor, let it be known. Interesting discussions occasionally arise in the commentary and everyone can and does, learn from them.

The C*I*Challenge community is an open and friendly group for photographers to share their skills, knowledge and help each other improve. Share your views with the group by using the comment facility to promote conversation about the photographs on display.

If you are new to Pbase, it is good to know that you don't have to browse all the photos to find new comments. First, make sure you are logged in to Pbase as "Canon Image Challenge", and then go to the Canon Image Challenge profile page [click on either "profile" or "Canon Image Challenge" in the upper left corner (depending on where you are)]. There, you'll find a link called "Comment Management", which will enable you to see all the comments in chronological order, with the newest comments on top. To make it real easy to check in on the comments, bookmark the page with your browser.
