Butterfly Central. The riders line up for their ten-second interval start of the second of two races for SuperSport bikes. Until a few years ago, all riders bump-started their bikes instead of the live engine starts used now. Bump-starting is an art in itself, requiring strength and perfect coordination. If you didn't get the motor fired on the first try, things could get embarrassing very quickly in front of the full grandstand. In about seventeen minutes from the time the first rider gets the starter's pat on the shoulder, everything must be cleared away as the bikes scream through here at close to 200 mph as they complete their first lap.
