Crete - Palace at Knossos - Arthur Evans reconstruction.jpg

The main reason for going to Crete is to visit the site of the Palace at Knossos.
The Palace complex was actually a small city, with elaborate multi-story homes as well as a palace for King Minos.
The site was excavated between 1900-1931 by Sir Arthur Evans who used the existing palace foundations and portions
of walls with frescoes to reconstruct parts of the palace and other structures we see at Knossos today.

This image shows a copy of a fresco (original in the Heraklion Museum - next image) under a porch with a typical
Minoan column which is tapered at the base, unlike other Greek columns.
