Promise

I was disappointed when I got to Yosemite in February to see that most of the snow in the valley had melted. So when it started to snow, I was very surprised, AND ecstatic! I was finally going to see the Winter Wonderland that I had hoped for. I was photographing from across El Capitan along the banks of the Merced River when the first snowflakes fell. It started to snow heavily but I was so excited that I stayed for a whole hour out there in the snow, and made many images like this.

I experimented with the white balance to express the coldness. And this young fir tree became one of my stories for this wintery backdrop.

I love the color in this image the cold blue sends shivers through me but the ardent green provides the hope of warmth.

Thank you Phil for the compliment! If I had packed up and left when it started to snow, I would have missed out on some amazing photography. Nature makes photography tough sometimes, but persistence often pays off.

A lovely image, Celia -- a delicate tapestry based on scale incongruity and abstraction. The bluish color makes the falling snow feel even colder. The tiny tree stands out not only by its comparative scale, but by its relative age and its degree of visibility, a symbol of youth played against a field of aged, barely implied, trees. You were very fortunate to visit Yosemite during a snowfall, and you made the most of what nature gave you to work with here.
