You should try the little bean bag pod. Its handy if you dont want to carry a tripod.

I prefer this shot as visually, the reflection of the light makes it more pleasing. Further, the stillness of the water is in stark contrast with the vibrant city and activities in the ship.

awesome photo, and i love the graded colour change. just a thought, but try using photoshop to correct for the slight perspective distortion noticed in the skyline

About the tripod, when it is too dark, we have no choice to use it, because the low speed of the camera to take correctly the picture, and when we use a tripod, we concentrate more on the picture. I know few photographers using always a tripod for their pictures.
