Crow Grabbing a Meadow Vole

I have a series of four images where a crow harrassed a meadow vole. You can see in this first image that there are several voles. As I drove by I saw a crow tossing something. I watched with my binoculars and saw what was happening so I photographed it as best I could. As you can see, there are dried weeds in the way which impeded sharp images. I don't know if the crow was amusing itself or trying to kill the vole to eat. It kept pecking at the vole and tossing it which you'll see in the following photos. Eventually, the crows flew away and the vole returned to the water. Whether it was mortally injured, I don't know, but it was alive when I left. Can anyone give me any insight to the behavior I saw? There are three more images. Do you usually see a group of voles like this?
