In Germany, my friend Henry Bowen had to return to the United States before he could make final arrangements to have this car shipped home, so he put it in my care for a few weeks until the shipping date arrived. With his permission, my roommate and I drove it to Vienna, Austria, where we spent a week. This is the time of my "What did you do in the war, Daddy?" experience.
My roommate, Augustus Mundt, was the son of Austrian Immigrants to America. When his mother learned of his plans to visit Vienna, she sent him a letter of introduction to the Baroness Walter Edel von Waltersheim, her schooldays friend. We arrived in Vienna, a city still recovering from the Nazi occupation of World War II, to find the baroness living in a small, but comfortable apartment building in central Vienna. She was a very refined lady in her early 60's and was both gracious and practical. Her neighbor was the chief of police of the Prader District of Vienna, and was the father of Krista Hickl, a young lady of approximately our age. She graciously agreed to be our tour guide in Vienna. We got into places not normally seen by travelers. She arranged for us to attend a private chamber concert at the Shoenbrun Palace. The concert was to be the next evening, after she had taken us to the Czech/Austrian border to meet a family. We spent the day with the family in a most wonderful way. The served me lemonade, and Augustus drank their local wine. He was not much of a drinker, and became quite drunk and so sick he could not attend the concert that evening. With Krista's consent, I invited two neighbors in the Student Housing building, where we were staying, to join us. The two were a psychiatrist's daughter from America and a Swedish School teacher.
When we had first gotten to Vienna and registered at the student housing, we met an American Student, who complained how hard it was to find a date in Vienna. Coincidentally, he also had a ticket to he same concert, and was outside the palace concert hall when I pulled up in the Mercedes Cabriolet, with the top down, accompanied by three very attractive ladies. I remember the look on his face. The concert was also very nice.
