"Spice Island" 2022

Hibiscus

She's been in my living room for 3 weeks now and seems to be doing very well. A week before Christmas, there are 5 flowers and another 4 buds on my Spice Island hibiscus.

I now have 17 hibiscuses growing in our living room window in a special area designed for just house plants. The first group of hibiscuses came inside from the Solar Room back on November 13th https://pbase.com/britestar/image/173161432 However, when the Solar Room space heaters couldn't put out enough heat to protect everything, I brought another 9 hibiscuses inside the main living area of our home a couple of weeks later. This was one of the second group. But 15 plants are only as many as I can fit in front of the window. There is no more room at the inn.

However, now, -10°F (-23.3°C) ACTUAL Temperature is being forecasted for the first day of Winter. Wind chill is supposed to be -40°F (-40°C) or lower. We haven't seen sun in so long that I can no longer remember when that was. The Solar Room has been relying solely on the Space heaters. At minus -10°F, with strong winds, and having no sun at all to help, the 3 little, space heaters won't be able to keep the huge Solar Room above freezing.

So, we're moving the furniture, putting down a tarp over the hard wood floors and area rug) and are in the process of filling the living room with even more hibiscuses to try to keep them alive during this latest prolonged cold snap. Hopefully, things will go better this December than last February: https://pbase.com/britestar/image/171422134

We lost so many plants in February 2022. However, it didn't even get as cold outdoors in February as it supposed to now do this Wednesday through Christmas. I think this past February was only around -0°F (-17°C). Nevertheless, the space heaters couldn't handle even that. A great many of the plants, that I had to leave in the Solar Room, froze to death; including cacti. Now, in December, I still won't be able to bring all of my Tropical plants inside. Some are too large to move.
