With the High Humidity added in, the Heat Index was a miserable 108 degrees Fahrenheit or 42.2 degrees Celsius - in the shade. The above pretty hibiscus sat in the full sun where the temperature was undoubtedly even higher. What caught my eye was that although it was a very fresh bloom, the edges almost immediately had started to curl from heat stress. Within a few hours, the entire flower was totally wilted and completely dead. Extreme heat seemed to speed up the aging progress. We've had quite a few 100-degree days this year.

Warm, friendly, big and strong, giant hibiscus 'Grandpa' blooms with huge 8-10" single flowers in rings of light orange, vivid orange and pink around a small red eye. 'Grandpa' is the child of giant orange mother 'Radiant' and tried and true red, yellow and pink father 'Flamboyant.' The bush is very upright, medium sized, and the flowers present beautifully on all sides. Released from HVH in 2019. Hybridizer: C. Black
