The Romanesque Basilica of Great St. Martin on the banks of the Rhine is one of the most prominent churches in Cologne's skyline.
Built on nearly 2,000-year-old Roman foundations, the site was once a swimming and sports facility for Roman soldiers.
Later, the church was built there, acquiring its present form in the 12th century.
Particularly impressive are the imposing crossing tower with its four corner turrets and the exposed foundations,
which reveal the church's rich historical heritage.
