Birds and Animals from the Republic of South Africa/Limpopo Province: 2009

I had the opportunity to travel to the Republic of South Africa during the last week of March, 2009. The trip was for research, but I had time to do a little bird and wildife photography as well. I had limited myself in equipment to a Nikon D200 camera and two lenses: a Nikkor 55-200mm f4-5.6 ED VR lens and a Sigma 18-50mm F: 3.5-5.6 HSM (digital) lens. I sometimes used the built-in flash on the D200, and did not take a tripod. Next time, I'll lug along my Nikkor 300mm f4, though the little 55-200mm Nikkor did a fair job for a $150.00 (refurbished) lens. I did manage to add 30 new birds to my life list, though not all are shown in this gallery. Most birds were identified from images viewed on my Epson P3000 viewer, checked against my copy of "Birds of Southern Africa" by Sinclair, Hockey and Tarboton, each evening. I compared photos of animals against plates in Simther's Mammals of Southern Africa, A field guide; edited by Peter Apps. Since this was my first trip to Africa, I can not claim to be an expert, so if I have made some errors in identification, please let me know. But please, I hope you enjoy viewing the images, as much as I had fun making them!
