Milky Way

A dark site during the summer shows vividly the density
of stars along the plane of our spiral galaxy -- this lane
we call the "Milky Way", which is also the name by which
our whole galaxy is called. In this image, centered between
the constellations Cygnus and Aquila, you can also see the
dark lane made by dust and gas which blocks our line of sight
along the galaxy's arms. Notice several areas of red nebulosity
in the upper right hand portion of the image.
