Athens

25-26 Jun 2007

Donna: We arrived at a time when the city experienced its highest temperature in 25 years (or so), 45-47degC at high noon! Boy were we scorched! Good thing I insisted on buying that SPF 50 lotion back in SM Batangas. Hehehe..
Athens is your typical busy metropolis of simple square buildings with antennas jutting out of the roof and clothes (even undies!) being dried on balconies overlooking the street. In some areas, restaurant tables and store merchandise overflow onto the sidewalk that overall, the streets - which are quite narrow in the first place - look very crowded. There are a few streets that look very nice and quaint, with trees lining the middle of the street and homey Greek tavernas on the side. We saw more of these streets as we walked nearer the Plaka (the old town) and the Acropolis. The business district is similar to Makati - with wide streets, organized traffic and mini-parks. But like in other European cities, skyscrapers are very rare. Buildings are only 6-8 floors on the average. Also, no building was painted with bright colors. Only white, beige, gray, brown, brick red. Probably one way the Europeans keep their cities' look so 'unified'. ;)
When it came to history, Athens for us was more interesting than Paris. 6000 years of civilization in the Acropolis.. And we actually walked on it. No wonder it's a Wonder of the World. Wonderful di ba! :P
See photos and captions below for more details. I didn't include historical info, di na kasya eh.. We have a short book on Greek history for those who are interested. :)
