Mendenhall Glacier Terminus at Mendenhall Lake

Juneau, Alaska

The terminus of Mendenhall Glacier is Mendenhall Lake, a glacial melt pond.
The lake is also fed by fresh water streams such as Nugget Creek and Steep Creek
which are fed by rain water and snow melt. Large chunks of ice that have separated
(or "calved") from the face of the glacier float in the lake as they slowly melt.
Located in the Tongass National Forest and just outside of the capital city of
Juneau, Alaska, the Mendenhall Glacier is one of 38 glaciers fed by the Juneau Icefield.
