The grounds of the Ford Edison Winter Estates in Fort Myers were gorgeous. Twenty acres of southern Florida beauty.
Thomas Edison came first around 1886 because the climate was perfect for his experiments in gardens and plant life.
Henry Ford did not have a home here until 1915, I believe, but visited Edison often prior to that.
Thomas Edison had patents awarded him for 65 straight years!
They worked together with Harvey Firestone on growing and developing trees to produce natural rubber.
Their years of experimenting changed when DuPont developed synthetic rubber for automobile tire production.
Thomas Edison was truly a remarkable man. He has almost 1100 patents to his name.
He build his winter estate as a working estate with sufficient grounds to experiment with plants and flowers, had a laboratory building and an office building.
Henry Ford would spend just weeks at his estate. He actually was mentored by Thomas Edison as a young man and he, along with Harvey Firestone, worked together to establish the auto industry in America.
We took the audio tour on February 20, 2013 and it was an very enjoyable and informative day in Fort Myers
