safety helmet here perhaps?...I often walk a riverside path which passes right by a golf course...there a sign reads 'caution be aware of flying golf balls'...no idea how much warning you might get though..

That sounds like a pretty dire warning to me! Of course, it wouldn't be too good to get hit in the head with a golf ball.

If it's me up there at the time, you can walk anywhere near the hole and be reasonably safe. Or along the fairway, come to that....
