A Dull End to the Year

North Berwick

Here we are again, a year closer to extinction of our species.
It has been a dull end to the year and the sun didn't even bother to make an appearance, although this ever hopeful fisherman did.
Photographically it has been a year of trial and effort. I have changed, and changed again, cameras several times; never quite deciding what is best for me.
In terms of IQ, the A7R was clearly the winner but it is still too bulky to carry as an everyday camera.
Looking back over the year, my favourite picture was taken with a GX8 but it is of my daughter, and the reason I like it has nothing to do with the camera. It was too much of a compromise between IQ and size.
I think the most fun camera to use was the E-P5: it is small, light and good for candids. But the IQ is not quite there. Still, I regret selling mine. Perhaps a re-buy is in order.
So, I hope you had a photographically enjoyable fun 2015, and I wish you all the best for 2016.

And last year was no parking.

I can really relate to the top image except I fish in warmer weather when at the shore. The peace and isolation is so well conveyed and would be appealing to any surf fisherman. A really beautiful capture Bill. I wonder if he had any luck? VVV

I like this shot regardless of the mood.
It breaks the composition rules and thats even better.
The man is picked out within an open area , this works well for me.
Had to laugh at Alan K's remarks and he is closer to his 2nd day of 2016.
I get the impression that its not the camera but its the photographer and his vision.
Being able to see what is there and record it in an interesting way.
Have a great New Year and I look forward to your photography in 2016.

Well, the image isn't dull, just moody! And that's a good thing.

I agree with Alan here... it is the photographer and his vision that is the real magic that makes a photo alive. And you are one of the best around here. Happy New Year!! V

Jayzus, talk about leading with "the bright side of life"!
I have a mortgage now, I no longer have the luxury of multiple systems. I've thrown my lot in with the Olympus M43 with compromises both good and bad, and just have to work with it and get better with it. Full frame? Maybe one day when I get the bank off my back.
Sometimes it's the photographer, not the gear though as you've demonstrated time and again over the last year; and again here. The crop's right to keep attention on the right elements, the inclusion of the reflections is just so, and the shooting angle including the island behind adds to the mix.
Wishing you a happy One-Less-Day-To-Our-Doom!

Without a doubt ( I believe that is a fisherman's thinking.)
and without doubt the image of your daughter is a winner and I send you both every good wish for 2016.
Thank you for sharing your travels and camera thoughts..always interesting to hear your findings....I look back at mine and without doubt I loved my canon 350D which my daughter is still using and takes some great shots and my little p&s Panasonic of some years back
Cheers Bill !!

Some fine images to wrap up this year, Bill. Maybe 2016 will bring some new and exciting gear too! V

Some great captures, and really, it's the photographer who makes the picture, not the camera, anyway. I wish you the best for 2016 as well, Bill.

Very nice use of that lovely light. You should come a bit to the south for some sunshine (almost three weeks of sunny and lovely days in a row)V

Terrific image, Bill. I can almost feel the cold breeze but the mood is lifted by the optimistic and colourful fisherman. :)
Good luck with your camera search. Happy New Year.
