Ghost Town Graveyard

Jerome, Arizona

I am sitting in Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix waiting for my fight home.
On the way here I visited Jerome which was once the largest ghost town in the state but has now become an artists' community, full of cafes and gift shops.
The graveyard was the most interesting part of the town, although it took a bit of finding - the visitor centre didn't know where it was but a helpful local showed me the way.
When I got there, a large groups of locals were playing pétanque in the graveyard, which seems a bit odd. The told me they play every Sunday after a drink in the bar.
I presume the graves surrounded by iron railings would be for the important people, and the average miner's grave isn't marked.

Seems a little disrespectful because they can play pétanque anywhere, but I think they think it's novel. There must not be anyone around to stop them, like their parents.
I was a care taker of a cemetery and I had to clean it up. not only the grounds, but people by putting an end to drug deals, vandals and people just showing up to sit around and drink.
The upside was jumping out of the dark, then turn on the really big bright flashlight to tell them to leave!

I looked it up because I can't help myself...that cross is dated 1897 apparently. What a shame that it's almost forgotten.

Boot Hill with upmarket markers. Nice back story Bill. ~v~

I like the composition and excellent clarity. The leaning cross is certainly a sign of the disrepair the cemetery has fallen into.

Looks like a rugged and unforgiving place to spend Eternity. Hopefully flight home is safe and uncomplicated.
