Cyclone Tracy 03

Darwin, Northern Territory

This is what the house in which we were living (2 Anthony Street, Wagaman) looked like on Christmas Day. We survived by sheltering under a mattress in the bathroom. That’s the Parer Drive water tower in the background – one of the few structures in the northern suburbs that was left standing. There was a story going around that they found a refrigerator in the water tower after the cyclone, but I don’t know whether that was true.

The refrigerator hit the steel water tank in Rapid Creek. It pushed the side in a fair way. The tank is a similar height to the one in the photo
